Oracy

Oracy at Ropsley Church of England Primary School

At Ropsley, we believe that spoken language is the foundation of learning and confidence. Oracy means the skills of speaking and listening — helping children express themselves clearly, listen respectfully, and communicate with confidence.

Why Oracy Matters

Strong oracy helps children to:

  • share ideas clearly
  • build vocabulary
  • understand what they read
  • work well with others
  • gain confidence in different situations

How We Teach Oracy

Oracy is woven through all subjects. Children regularly:

  • discuss stories and ideas
  • explain their thinking in lessons
  • learn new vocabulary
  • work with partners and groups
  • present, perform and debate
  • listen carefully and respond respectfully

From storytelling in Reception to debate and presentation in Year 6, children build their skills step‑by‑step.

How Parents Can Help

You can support oracy at home by:

  • talking together about everyday events
  • reading and discussing stories
  • asking open questions
  • encouraging your child to explain their thoughts

At Ropsley, we want every child to find their voice and use it well.
