British Values
At Ropsley, we are committed to helping children grow into confident, respectful and responsible citizens. British Values are woven through our curriculum, our behaviour expectations and the wider life of the school.
The five British Values are:
- Democracy
- Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
We also teach children about equality and protected characteristics, ensuring every pupil understands the importance of fairness, respect and inclusion.
How We Teach British Values
Democracy
Children experience democracy through:
- electing the school council
- sharing ideas and opinions in lessons
- discussing current events through Picture News
Rule of Law
Children learn:
- why rules keep us safe
- how behaviour choices have consequences
- how laws help communities work well
Individual Liberty
We encourage children to:
- make positive choices
- express their ideas respectfully
- understand their rights and responsibilities
Mutual Respect & Tolerance
Children learn to:
- value differences in culture, belief and background
- show kindness, empathy and respect
- understand diverse traditions through RE, PSHE and the wider curriculum
Where These Values Appear in Our Curriculum
British Values are embedded across subjects, including:
- English – discussing characters, viewpoints and moral choices
- PSHE (Jigsaw) – relationships, fairness, equality and wellbeing
- RE – exploring different faiths, beliefs and worldviews
- History & Geography – learning about people, societies and cultures
- Computing – online safety and responsible behaviour
- Collective Worship – themes of respect, trust, friendship and responsibility
From simple ideas like sharing and turn‑taking in Year 1 to debate, ethics and fairness in Year 6, pupils build their understanding step‑by‑step.
