Reading in EYFS & Key Stage 1
Reading
At Ropsley Church of England Primary School, we encourage children to read for pleasure as well as impressing upon them the importance of learning to read. Children are expected to be reading at least five times a week in every year group and this should be recorded in the reading diary provided.
For Early Readers we use the Read, Write Inc. scheme as our main readers.
Books
We have recently purchased a lovely range of books for children in Reception and Key Stage One (for pupils who are still on the phonics programme) to take home. These 'Book Bag Books' (from the Read, Write Inc. scheme) are sent home weekly as well as a levelled Oxford Reading Tree book. The children are encouraged to choose their own books to develop an interest and love of reading. Not only do we look that the children can read the words in their book, we encourage rereading for fluency, expression, comprehension and pleasure.
Alongside their home reading book, pupils also read their phonics text (Read, write Inc. book) as part of a small group 4 times with it being sent home on the Friday for home reading.
Reading Challenges
We have recently held a number of EYFS and KS1 home reading competitions which have been very well-received. So far we’ve done a ‘crazy reader’ competition as well as a short film/book report competition where pupils have to ‘sell’ their favourite book to others. The winners were delighted to receive a book of their choosing to take home.
