Year 1 / 2
Welcome to the Year 1 / 2 class page.
We are The Darling's Class, named after the inspirational heroine Grace Darling, as voted for by the children last term.
Our topic this term is Mega Structures, which will be sure to capture the interest of all.
For the first half of the term we will be focussing on Geography. We will be using maps to identify and name the 7 continents and the 5 oceans before looking at the famous landmarks around the world and then more locally in London.
When we return after the October half-term we will focus on History, where we will learn all about a local mega structure: Belton House. We will compare what life was like in the past, when Belton House was built, to our lives now.
In DT, we will be making our own megastructure using cardboard and we will explore different folding and cutting techniques. In Art we will be focussing on formal elements, such as lines, shapes, texture and tone.
In Science, we will be investigating everyday materials and children will take part in practical activities, including experiments, indoors and also down at wood school. We will also embark on a seasonal walk once a term, and learn about the weather.
In RE, we will be learning about Islam and the 5 pillars that underpin their religion.
Miss Pepper will be teaching Music, PSHE and French on a Wednesday afternoon. In Music we are learning about singing in different styles, such as Blues, Baroque, Latin, Bhangra, Folk and Funk. In PSHE we are looking at friendship and staying healthy, and in French the children will start to learn how to say numbers and colours.
Year 1's will be working their way through the phonics programme and will have Active English sessions that look at grammar. Year 2's will have a short phonics session, Active English and Literacy, and we will be reading and responding to fiction, poetry and non-fiction and writing in a different genres.
Our core texts this term are:
The Curious Garden by Peter Brown, Peace at Last by Jill Murphy, Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper, The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas, Can't you sleep little bear? by Martin Waddell, Whose afraid of the big bad book? by Lauren Murphy and Shine by Sarah Asuquo.
These will be shared at the end of the day and revisited often. Children will also be able to vote for stories and will have poetry shared with them too.
In Maths, children will start with place value before moving onto addition and subtraction.
PE will take place on a Friday morning and children will need to come to school in their kits. Please can children also have outdoor kit and Wellington boots in school.
We are so excited for the children to join together as one class and the classroom is feeling spacious and ready for all 29 children. There are lots of different areas for the children to explore during independent learning time. Photo's will follow.
We hope you and the children are as excited as we are for the term ahead. We can be contacted on Class Dojo if you ever have any questions or concerns, or you can catch Miss Cartwright on the playground in the morning.
