Welcome to news about our learning in Year 3/4 for the Autumn Term 2016.
The children are settled in well and enjoying the variety of the work and play.
Our topic this term is Romans in Britain. We are looking at the reasons why the romans invaded and settled here, and comparing them with the celtic people they came into contact with. We will look at life in the roman army and some aspects of life in roman towns such as Colchester. The children will also look at the legacy they left, and end the term doing individual research as usual to extend their knowledge using books, the internet, art and design.
We are in the middle of looking at place value in maths, and this will be followed by the written methods of all four operations before the end of term. This will give the children solid foundations to base the rest of the year on. Thank you for supporting your child with learning the times tables they are not confident with. As each child is at a different stage these will often be given as homework so they can improve the correct table for them.
Adventure stories are our focus to start the term and plenty of work is being done on description of settings and characters.
Our 25 minutes a day focusing on spellings is going well and thank you for helping your child to choose activities each Thursday when they bring home their spelling log books. These spellings are a mix of those they are focusing on that week in spelling sessions, those they have spelt wrongly in independent work, and some from the year 3/4 spelling list that they need to learn.
Science - we are looking at materials and their properties. This will be followed after half term by states of matter.
RE is looking at a variety of aspects of Hinduism.
We have a gymnastics coach here on a Monday afternoon, and the class are learning how they can push themselves to move, stretch and balance in different ways.
